Hammett, Trujillo and other punk rock covers for Wedding Band Jam

Metallica was very busy this weekend at Napa’s Bottle Rock Festival, but ahead of their weekend set, the band’s Kirk Hammett and Robert Trujillo took some extra time playing with all-star collective The Wedding Band, doing covers for fans at the Jam Cellars Ballroom at the Margrit Mondavi Theater in Napa.

While you’d expect some of the metal picks like ‘Ace of Spades’ and ‘War Pigs’, the mostly metal collective showed that punk has a place in their world too, working on the Ramones’ ‘Blitzkrieg Bop’. , The “California Uber Alles” by Dead Kennedys and “London Calling” by The Clash, among others.

Joined on stage by Death Angel’s Mark Osegueda, The Mars Volta’s Jon Theodore and Bad Wolves’ Doc Coyle, the Metallica duo showed they know their punk style too.

This should come as no surprise to Metallica fans who have seen the guitarist and bassist on shows wow fans with their varied influences during the “noodle” part of the show.

“For Rob and me, it’s cool, because we can indulge our love of funk and punk,” Hammett told Cosmo Music in 2019.

Last week, Guns N’ Roses bassist Duff McKagan said punk was responsible not only for his band, but Metallica as well. “The return of the punk scene [in the ’70s] and what the [Sex] Pistols helped generate was a really special thing,” the bassist recalled. “There would be no Guns N’ Roses, there would be no Metallica, Nine Inch Nails, Nirvana, you could just go on. Foo Fighters – there would have been none of this without it.”
