While they may not have been in attendance, BTS still managed to dominate the 2021 Mnet Asian Music Awards, also known as MAMA. The ceremony, one of the most prestigious in the South Korean music industry, was a welcome return to the in-person televised ceremonies, with thousands of fans in attendance to see their favorite K-pop superstars put on an incredible show.

BTS came out of the night out on top of the winners, and they landed more trophies than most artists will get in their careers. The boy group took home half a dozen of the main awards, and they also came out on top in two other verticals, taking home eight awards in total. This total includes the four Daesangs (the best rewards).

BTS was named both Global Icon of the Year and Artist of the Year, their single “Butter” won coveted Song of the Year, while their late 2020 album To be was considered the album of the year. The septet has won all of these honors before, and most of them have been champions multiple times. Comes behind BTS in terms of number of awards won, IU, which won three new awards this year. The solo female superstar was named Best Female Artist and she also topped both Best Vocal Performance (for her single “Celebrity”) and Best Collaboration (for “Nakka” with AKMU).

The only other act to win more than one competitive award was Aespa, which won the categories Best Dance Performance – Female Group and Best New Female Artist. Including the “other” area which is the world’s Top 10 fans, Twice joins Aespa with a pair of trophies.

MAMA 2021 featured high-energy performances from Brave Girls, Itzy, Stray Kids, Tomorrow X Together, Wanna One, Aespa, as well as NCT U, NCT Dream and NCT 127.
