AWOLNATION & Portugal. the Man link on unexpected massive hits – 105.7 The Point
In addition to working together on a new cover of the Scorpios song “Wind of Change”, AWOLNATION and Portugal. the man have one other thing in common: massive and unexpected hit singles.
Aaron Bruno had been part of several alternative bands that fell apart before forming AWOLNATION and releasing the project’s first single, “Sail”, in 2010. The track ended up spending a total of 79 weeks on the Billboard Hot 100, which is the third all-time. In 2021, “Sail” was certified Diamond by the RIAA.
Likewise, Portugal. The Man had built up a loyal following while remaining a staple of alternative radio before breaking into the mainstream with his 2017 multi-platinum hit, “Feel It Still.”
Speaking to ABC Audio, Bruno shares that he and the members of PtM talked “a little” about their similar success, out of nowhere.
“Not too much,” says Bruno. “I don’t really want to ask them too many things that they have to talk about all the time.”
He adds, “We had a few moments where we talked about the experience of writing those two songs, ‘Feel It Still’ and ‘Sail,’ and maybe some of the similarities, the flow of those songs in writing class,” he said.
When they talked about it, Bruno said Portugal. the man was “very humbled” about “Feel It Still”. He is also happy that another “underground” artist has found such success.
“There are hit songs that you hear that you need to hear over and over and over again, and you think, ‘Godd ***, I don’t want to hear that song anymore,'” Bruno says. “But their song is one that I really like. Every time I hear it, I never spin it.
